The Scorpions came, they saw, they conquered.  Early Saturday morning the El Paso Scorpions hit the pitch for the Second Annual Chupacabra 7’s Rugby Tournament in Las Cruces, NM.  The Las Cruces Horny Toads, NMSU Chiles, and Hobbs Tigers from New Mexico met with the UTEP Miners and the Scorpions on the battlefield to determine who would be named Champion for the next year.

The Scorpions fielded two teams to the tournament, providing an extra challenge to others in attendance.  With the first try of the day, Brandon Dubord got the momentum rolling in what would be an exciting morning of rugby.

Fans started noticing a pattern as the Scorpions pushed themselves like never before to achieve victory after victory, climbing the bracket towards the final match.  Fast breakaways, precision kicking, and a little blood here and there became the trademarks of the team.  It was a hard hitting day, but the hardest hit of all came from Aaron Henckel as the thunderclap of his impact was heard all the way back in El Paso after he was given a dummy pass. Aaron Henckel – 1, Defender - 0.

The Scorpions ultimately faced the Las Cruces Horny Toads in the final, proving without a doubt who was to be Champion as the Scorps plowed their way through the Toads to a 37-12 victory.  A hat trick of tries from Bobby Torres earned him “All Tourney Back of the Day” and recognition at the social.

In true Scorpion fashion, the team transitioned from dominating the pitch to dominating the social as they led the other teams in good natured rugby songs and an all around good time at the drink up hosted generously by the Las Cruces teams.   With this notch in their belt, the Scorpions continue to train hard for this coming season of XV’s. This last weekend of August is the Santa Fe 10’s tournament, so come out and support your El Paso Scorpions. If you can’t make it, stay tuned for the write up.
